Hey all,
My name is Seth Dowling and I am the event developer and promoter for the North Nevada Rally. I'm trying to expand my PR and marketing horizons a little, and I'd like to share what Ideas and knowledge I have too.
I'm also looking to move to the LA area in the very near future, so I thought I'd see if I could get to know some folks in the business down there any way I can.

Best promotional materials?

What are some of the most clever promotional materials you guys have seen for pr campaigns? At the PR firm that I used to work at, it was often just samples of the product itself, but that's rather boring. Have you ever gotten anything as a promotional material that you either a) ended up using, or b) thought was pretty cool?

Tips for Newbies

Hi! I have recently changed careers from the techie side of the dot com world into the more touchy-feely world of MArketing and PR. I am currently doing marketing for a construction company, and need advice on promotion. I'm developing the marketing collateral, plus outsourced some very high end brochures/website/CDs.

My question is: what is the best way to research and figure out a particular demographic? The company wants to transition into clients who want to build homes in the $1 million + range.

Also, any other PR/Marketing tools and tips would be greatly appreciated.
New Company needs PR Advice

I am a serial entrepreneur that has just launched a beta version of new type of web publishing company that pays 50% of our Gross Revenue out to members (who join for free) and editors as dividends .

Just like any other entrepreneur who thinks they have a great idea... i'm in need of honest input about my idea from impartial individuals, would you mind logging onto our site www.21blogstreet.com and telling me what you think about the idea and how to create a PR campaign for the company???

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I usually contact people by phone and need to make a good impression.

I usually feel it when I have said something that was not well received but by then, the damage is done.

Since I use the phone a lot, including to get in touch with people again and to secure meetings or simply to get ahold of decisions makers, I need the right bedside manners.

Anything that I could read?

Hi everyone,

I publish a regional health and fitness magazine and am always looking for ways to promote and publicize it to readers in the city. Do any of you have ideas that I can draw from to publicize a burgeoning magazine in the city and that doesn't require a huge budget?

Your ideas are most welcome!

thanks,

Hello Fellow Tribers:

I am on over 30 Tribes and only a couple of them have a post here or there. Is Tribe.net a dieing social network? There seems to be more activity on MySpace and YahooGroups.

If it weren't for the spammers, AdSense, and MLM offers there would be no activity in most tribes....

I would love to see some meaningful conversations here... Am I the only one?

I would love to hear some feedback.... Let’s get some topics rolling... is there anyone out there who has a question, or struggle or an idea that they want to get some feedback on?

I look forward to chatting with you all soon.

Sincerely,

Maximum Balance for Maximum Change

The concept of 'Maximum Balance' is a contradiction by nature. Maximum implies an extreme, the upper limit, the most. Balance implies moderation, evenness and trade-offs. Life, for many of us, is a struggle to achieve and maintain a growing and often contradictory set of goals. The pursuit of Maximum Balance is the challenge of constantly achieving superior results in all areas of life, without compromise. http://maximumchange.mbgroups.com/

* Have you ever been so focused on career success that your relationships with your friends and family suffered?
* How about never having the time to do something for yourself because everything you do is for your children and/or partner?
* Have you ever received a raise or promotion and you didn't stop to celebrate because you were already thinking about the next one?
* How about getting so focused on your personal challenges or needs that your job suffered?
* Do you ever find yourself so obsessed with financial success that you can't enjoy the benefits of that success?
* Or maybe you're so worried about financial disaster that you can't relax?
* Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by everything in life that you just didn't know where to focus your efforts?

It is the challenge of being able to achieve success in all areas of life, without compromise, that led us to develop Maximum Balance. Using the Internet and Maximum Balance Interactive as the foundation of the Maximum Balance Framework, we have developed a dynamic, interactive approach to personal achievement that is action-oriented and results-driven. Our free Getting Balanced program will get you started. And our innovative products will give you the personalized approach you deserve to achieve your goals online and offline — call it your Life MBA. http://maximumchange.mbgroups.com/

OUR MISSION

The Maximum Balance mission is to transform the way people achieve and maintain their life goals and objectives through our unique personal achievement program. By delivering the systems, tools and support that enable people to achieve success across five critical Cornerstones of life — personal, relationships, career, finance and giving-we believe we can help more people maximize the success they achieve in life for two reasons. First, we believe the Internet is the best foundation to deliver a program that can be constantly refreshed and personalized over time, versus traditional programs delivered via books and CDs where the content can't be updated in real-time. Second, we believe our unique approach to providing an integrated program across the five Cornerstones of life provides people with a system that realistically addresses the interactions of all of life's challenges and opportunities. We are driven each day to connect with those that are interested in improving their own lives as well as the lives of people around them by providing an easy-to-use program to help them achieve Maximum Balance. http://maximumchange.mbgroups.com/

need a PR help

The best way to get an idea of what we(girlfriend and I) are doing is to check out our website http://www.travelinghelpfulhuman.com/

I am insearch of advice on getting a PR person to work for me. This idea has a lot of potential and advertising revenue. We will be driving everywhere and going to so amny huge events, this is a great way to get a product or business a lot of exposure, I just need someone to pitch the idea to all the businesses that might want to get a space to advertise.

I already have a few people interested in advertising, but I don't know how much to charge, I was thinking of charging per square foot and by the month.

Would a PR person be the right one to go to? is there anyone out there that wants in on this?and to work for me, getting the word out?

any and all advice would be great.

thanks for taking the time to read this.
need some advice

i regularly get my coffee at this great coffee shop in my county. it really has a lot of potential to be the town hang-out, but after several months, it still hasn't taken off yet. when i come in, there are only one or two people there, if any. the owners are getting discouraged. they can't figure it out because they have so much that other places do not- free internet access on the cafe computer, cushy comfy couches, tons of the latest reading material for customers to peruse for free and a stage and other capabilities for great acoustic stage performances.

the obvious reason i saw that they are not doing well is advertising. they don't seem to get the word out enough, but they also confuse people with their sign. it's called michael's. sounds like a jewelry store, huh? and that is the sign glowing over the business. they need some indication that they are a coffee shop (especially since it is the only one in the town).

they said tonight that they may do away with music performances all together because they are so inconsistent. one problem is they don't pay their performers (because they can't afford it). i suggested that they charge a cover at the door. another idea i had is to organize a concert with various acoustic artists.

i don't know, though, i am a rookie at this pr stuff. so what kinds of ideas do you guys have to turn this business around? i really want to make this happen.

thanks!

Press Releases without attachments

I would like to know how best to send press releases without attachments since no one will open them. But I still want to be able to include photos and graphics.

Is there a program that can do this besides signing up for something like Constant Contact? I use Quark 4 to make my press releases and am learning Quark 6. I also have In Design but do not know it yet. I use PhotoShop some.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

New theatre/talent company starting.

Hi.
I am starting a new theatre/talent company in the Los Angeles area.
This will give anyone who is a member of it, real publicity, even if you live far from L.A.
The idea is, to give all members of the company, advertising space in all the programs of all the shows that we do.
That will include, plays, modeling shows, and anything that we do.
If you are an actor, model, or someone who wants to get notice in the entertainment industry, then you can have your picture, bio, e-mail address, and more in every program.
That way, if you live far from Hollywood, or, are not in a show, you still get notice.
If you are a business, then you can take out advertising space, and become a member without paying membership dues.
I want a quality company, that gives back to the community, and one that brings customers to any business that is a part of this.
I LOVE the idea.
Entertainment and business have been very successful together for years, and advertising combined with people who have an eye for success, well, wins.
Please look at my profile at Myspace.com for more details.
http://profiles.myspace.com/users/9930867
OR send an e-mail to:
academyawards@excite.com
Thank you.
George Vreeland Hill.

Advice - PR, copywriter, ghostwriter?

I have a less then completely developed idea but...

The topic is real estate investing. Something I have been doing for 21+ years.

I am looking for someone to work with to:

- Develop a brand
- Ghostwrite articles. I am assuming that my writing skills are not polished so someone to be write, edit and maybe do some background research as part of a large writing exercise where I will create the outline or skeleton. Things for ezines, blogs, forums, etc.
- Using articles and other research that I or someone else would do, create a book (ebook and a physical book)
- Plus all the PR aspects behind such a project.

Budget - completely unclear. Low end - Maybe some barter when it comes to training on how to successfully invest. Maybe a large budget off the back of a few deals I am doing if the plan for the above seems worth investing in. An aspect of the book would be to document the investment activities presently going on as case studies.

Not sure this provides a fair picture. In that case, consider this a request for feedback as to how to shape my 'requirements" (requirements sounds a little grand).

If you know someone specific that is interested in exploring different options that would be perfect.

Oh, one last aspect. We are talking about a view of real estate investing that spans multiple countries. I travel a lot and invest in multiple countries. I also would expect to work with someone who can deal with being remote as I am rarely in one location for long. (Yesterday was London, today Chester England, tomorrow is Cape Cod MA, then Liverpool England, then Oregon). You get the idea.

Thanks in advance,
John

Question...

I am designing a wedding invitation for a couple, (of course), and they are requesting that I make it very clear that children are not permitted at the wedding or the reception.
How can you exclude children, who are they going to get to be the ringer bearer and flower girl? Hmmm???
Anyway, the question is how to word this request so that the couple doesn't look like they hate children? (they don't)Please help. I'm supposed to have these invitations done Friday.
Thanks, Eden

greatest PR stunts ever

what are the best moves you remember? either in terms of genius or effectiveness...

for the latter, I'd say Rosanne Barr singing the national anthem.

for the former, Leslie Harpold's old PR co. attended the Webby Awards... when the best site was called out, it was EBay, but no reps from EBay were there, so there was an uncomfortable silence... someone from Leslie's group jumped up, ran to the podium, grabbed the statue, thanked the crowd, and ran off... the next day, the statue was posted for sale -- on EBay! at which point, they alerted the press as well, and their site got something like 3mil hits that day.

Pulse on America - Platinum Television

Has anyone ever heard of "Pulse on America" from Platinum Television?

http://www.platinumtelevision.com/index.php

They are interested in doing a piece on a company I am doing some work for. Is it legit?

From their website:

Since it's founding in 1997, Platinum Television Group has been keeping viewers up to date on the world around them through a variety of ground-breaking, up to the minute, educational shows designed to cover the broad spectrum of topics that affect today's discriminating television viewer.

CNN Headline News showcases a world of information -- top stories, business news, weather, sports and entertainment -- packed into 15 minutes by a round table of anchors. Pulse on America compliments normal CNN Headlines programming at the top and bottom of every hour with content that focuses on enhancing the lives of the viewer.

Michael Moore

Regardless of your politial affiliation, you must agree that Moore's film and the it's backlash are make great PR fodder.

Don't hate me, but I like Moore for the most part... however after listening to a lot of talk radio in the car today, I started doubting the movies credibility. Then I caught myself. I started doubting based on the number of people (impressions?) that I heard on the radio calling Moore a liar. Interestingly, I dismissed each caller's argument and could poke holes in the hosts rants... still the negative impression made a big enough impression on me that I had started having my own doubts.

Unlike most of the population, I challenged the bad taste in my mouth by looking up the facts... which re-confirmed my original feelings.

Box office recipts are huge already.

comments? some questions:

1. How do you think that the movie will influence the voting public?

2. How do you think the rights anti-Moore smear campain will effect the opinions of voters and/or movie go'ers?

3. If Moore or the film was your client, how would you react?

4. If a Republican think tank hired your firm to do damage control, how would you handle the account?

Any comments welcome! Let's try not have a political debate here : )

I've beaten around ye bush for close to a year now with minute success, and it's time for me to, uh, defecate or vacate the pot.

I run a zine, www.theprecipice.com , and have been sorely lacking both PR and sales. I know people who do both, but tell me that it's just not worth doing an hour here and there, because a small effort amounts to zero, while a larger effort yields some reward.

with four issues in our belts, we need to really get the word out and bring in ad dollars NOW. I can get artists, writers, and even (starting with this upcoming issue) celebrities to lend their talents, but I just can't get any help with PR or sales, without paying for it upfront.

btw, I run this with close to no budget -- I pay for the costs, but can't afford to really employ anyone without ad dollars. subscription dollars will come later on.

so here's the question: how can I get some PR help? signing over a piece of the company hasn't seemed to attract anyone. do you people think it's possible for a bi-monthly zine to get someone doing some p/t PR work under an scenario that isn't paying salary?

I've entertained the idea of getting some college student to intern on it, but I don't think they'd benefit all that much, as they wouldn't be under the tutelage of a pro (I myself have some experience, but nothing much to speak of).

thoughts? comments?
thanks!

I run an eZine, and typically find it tough just *finding* publicists for celebrities. generally, I go through their managers or agents in order to find out who their publicists are.

is there an easier way to find listings of publicists? for example, I'm having a hell of a time getting ahold of Radiohead's publicist (which I think is Ambrosia Healey).

Anyone ever have any luck with him? He's a very tough nut to crack... but he's a star maker for sure. I just somewhere that a positve mention in his column can yield a 20% stock price increase... which is about what I found when I got a former hardware client of mine some Mossberg ink.

I've had a few dealings with him over the years... I've found that if he responds to an email (forget the phone) he'll shoot a one or two line question or suggestion at you, then he retreats. * My big Mossberg tip - is that he loves to have a hand in the technology... if he responds, he might say something like "sounds okay, but I'd like it to come with____ ". If you get a comment like that from him and your client is a public company, go directly to the clients head eng. or product manager and see if it can be done! Sell the reason... if it can be done, do it...Give Mossberg his stake in the project even if he will never acknoledge it, he just may write about it... anyone else?
